Plenaries

This practical and inspiring session explores the role of spiritual care in palliative care, with a special focus on the unique contribution of volunteers. We’ll look at what spirituality means in the context of serious illness, how spiritual needs may present, and how volunteers can offer intentional, compassionate presence — not just being there, but truly being with.
Through real-life stories, simple tools, and an experiential meditation, participants will gain confidence in recognising spiritual distress, responding sensitively, and respecting diverse spiritual and cultural expressions. A session to nourish the spirit and strengthen the heart of volunteer practice.

Good listening is more than a skill — it’s an art that lies at the heart of compassionate palliative care. In this lively and interactive session, we will explore how our actions and unconscious assumptions can shape the way we listen. Through practical activities and fresh perspectives, you will discover new ways to truly hear and see those you care for. Come ready to have fun, reflect, and leave with simple, powerful tools to become a more open, attentive, and receptive listener.

Joanne will be presenting “How to talk to children about death, dying and grief.”. Participants will learn about simple tips and resources to help facilitate open conversations and answer children’s questions in developmentally appropriate ways.

This 75-minute session supports palliative care volunteers to maintain their wellbeing while providing meaningful companionship and support to patients and families. Volunteers often give generously from the heart, yet many find it challenging to balance compassion with healthy boundaries.
This session will explore practical ways to stay connected and supportive without becoming over-involved or stepping into roles best held by family or close friends. Volunteers will learn how to recognise when the emotional load is becoming too much, how to say no kindly and confidently, and how to communicate openly with volunteer managers when they need to step back or seek additional support.
Participants will take away realistic strategies for protecting their own emotional and social wellbeing, sustaining their commitment to caring work, and remaining an integral part of a compassionate community
There will be an opportunity to discuss and share ideas with other volunteers.
